Mercati Generali with Office for Metropolitan Architecture

Commercial, leisure and cultural center for the redevelopment of formal industrial area of Ostiense in Rome. Total area 2,700,000 sq. ft.

Renovation of the former central market in Rome into a retail, cultural and leisure destination. The site is a few blocks from the ancient Roman city walls in a transitional neighborhood - post-industrial and disadvantaged but well connected by transportation as necessary for a central market. The huge scale of the project is remarkable for such an ancient city where new construction is extremely limited.

Existing buildings of high quality will be preserved and restored. New additions include a collection of retail pavilions and a cultural center including a cinema capable of hosting international events, such as the Roman film festival, as well as a theatre for 3,000 people, art galleries, sport and recreational areas.

The masterplan aims to overcome the fortress-like quality of most contemporary shopping and leisure centers by keeping all circulation exterior and by marking connections to the surrounding neighborhood as frequently as possible. The entire site is walkable and open to the public - an extension of the surrounding Roman city.
